Newman is a regular participant in the Philharmonic’s Chamber Music Society and Green Umbrella series and has had the opportunity to perform the Mendelssohn Octet with Joshua Bell, and Thomas Adès’ Piano Quintet with the composer playing piano. Newman also performs with the Grammy-winning Southwest Chamber Music, and joined them on their 2007 tour to Mexico. He can be heard on their recording of the First and Third String Quartets of Carlos Chávez. Newman has also recorded music of Eric Zeisl for Harmonia Mundi, and Stories From My Favorite Planet by Los Angeles composer Russell Steinberg. He also gives regular performances with the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival in the San Francisco area.

Newman has played concertos by Mendelssohn, Bruch, Brahms, and Ned Rorem with local orchestras. In January 2008 Newman played Vivaldi’s Four Seasons concertos with the Knoxville (Tennessee) Symphony.

Currently, Newman teaches privately and at Pepperdine University in Malibu, and is the co-founder/conductor of the West Los Angeles College Summer Youth Orchestra. Yearly, he produces, performs, and narrates a concert in English and Spanish at St. Thomas Church for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and has helped the Philharmonic’s Education Department develop their high school and youth orchestra outreach programs. In the summer of 2010, he opened Hilltop Boot Camp: Orchestra Audition Preparation for Strings; go to playdonjuan.com for details.
